How Many Teeth Do Horses Have?
Horses have two sets of teeth throughout their lives, much like humans. Deciduous teeth, also known as baby
teeth, are the first set, and permanent teeth, also known as adult teeth, are the second set. Horses
have two distinct tooth kinds. The incisors, often known as the front teeth or front teeth, are used to chop
off feed (such as grass or hay). The cheek teeth, which contain premolars and molars and are used to chew
food before swallowing, are the second class of teeth. Wide, flat, and with a grooved surface, these teeth are
designed to facilitate grinding. While an adult mare may only have 36 to 40 adult teeth, an adult male horse will have 40 permanent teeth.
