Can Lizard Live Underwater?

Since lizards lack gills, they are unable to breathe underwater. Although they can

hold their breath for a time, they ultimately need to surface for oxygen. Their bodies

were not made to survive in water. They have the ability to hold their breath and

spend some time submerged. Compared to other lizards, marine iguanas can

remain submerged for a longer period of time. They can hold their breath for more than

ten minutes and are large. They must breathe fresh air when that period has passed or

they will likewise perish. Because they are marine iguanas, their bodies are built for swimming.
