What Does a Mourning Dove Eat?

The main food that mourning doves consume is seeds, not insects. These birds can and do consume

weed seeds, which is beneficial for farmers, gardeners, and anybody who lives near overgrown vacant

areas. (They do, however, enjoy corn.) These doves were designed to forage on the ground, where they may

consume up to 20% of their body weight in seeds each day. Install an open platform feeder, a ground

feeder, or simply just scatter seeds on the ground to entice these lovely doves to your yard. They enjoy eating things

like ragweed, wild grasses, and grains. In a pinch, they will consume bigger seeds like sunflower seeds, broken maize, and shelled peanuts.
