The Colorado Rockies’ 2025 season continues to spiral downward, reaching a historic low point. With a 5-3 defeat to the New York Mets on Sunday, the Rockies have now accumulated 50 losses in just 59 games, making them the third-fastest team in Major League Baseball history to reach this dubious milestone.
A Historic Pace of Defeat
Only the 1884 Kansas City Unions and the 1876 Cincinnati Red Stockings reached 50 losses faster, both doing so in 57 games. The Rockies’ current record stands at 9-50, the worst through 59 games in the modern era (since 1901) . They have been swept in 10 of their 20 series this season, tying them with the 1962 Mets, 1970 Milwaukee Brewers, and 1994 Athletics for the most sweeps through 20 series.
Sunday’s Game: A Familiar Narrative
The Rockies took an early lead with Orlando Arcia’s solo home run off Mets pitcher Clay Holmes in the first inning. However, the Mets responded with a three-run homer by Pete Alonso in the fourth. Tyler Freeman’s two-run shot in the fifth briefly tied the game, but Francisco Lindor’s solo home run in the bottom of the inning put the Mets ahead for good.
Offensive and Defensive Struggles
Colorado’s offense has been inconsistent, and their pitching staff has struggled significantly. Rookie pitcher Carson Palmquist, despite recording a career-high eight strikeouts, allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings during Sunday’s game . The team has also been plagued by defensive issues, leading the league in errors and throwing miscues.
A Season of Unprecedented Lows
The Rockies have lost all 19 series they’ve played this season, extending a streak of 22 consecutive series losses dating back to 2024, an MLB record . They have also lost 28 of their first 31 road games, the worst start in the modern era
Looking Ahead
The Rockies will attempt to halt their eight-game losing streak as they begin a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Monday. With the season nearing its midpoint, Colorado faces the daunting task of avoiding a historically poor finish.
