Carlos Alcaraz Overcomes Dzumhur to Advance in 2025 French Open

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz faced a formidable challenge from Bosnian veteran Damir Dzumhur in the third round of the 2025 French Open. Despite a strong start, Alcaraz had to dig deep to secure a 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier.

A Match of Momentum Swings

Alcaraz, the second seed, appeared in control during the first two sets, showcasing his signature blend of power and finesse. However, Dzumhur, ranked 69th globally, capitalized on a dip in Alcaraz’s form in the third set. The Bosnian’s aggressive play and deep groundstrokes disrupted Alcaraz’s rhythm, allowing Dzumhur to claim the third set 6-4.

The fourth set saw Dzumhur break Alcaraz’s serve early, igniting hopes of a potential upset. Yet, Alcaraz regained composure, breaking back and eventually sealing the match. Reflecting on the encounter, Alcaraz admitted, “I suffered quite a lot today. The first two sets were under control, then he started to play more deeply and more aggressively. It was really difficult for me.”

Dzumhur’s Resilience

Dzumhur’s performance was commendable, especially considering his recent injury concerns. He required medical attention during the match for his right leg, yet continued to challenge the reigning champion. The crowd acknowledged his tenacity, offering applause for his efforts throughout the contest.

American Surge at Roland Garros

The 2025 French Open has witnessed a resurgence of American men’s tennis. With victories from Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton, three American men have advanced to the fourth round—a feat last achieved in 1995. Should qualifier Ethan Quinn win his upcoming match, it would mark the first time since 1991 that four American men reach the second week in Paris.

Looking Ahead

Alcaraz’s next challenge is against 13th seed Ben Shelton, a rising American star known for his powerful serve and athleticism. Their upcoming clash promises to be a highlight of the tournament, pitting the defending champion against one of the sport’s most exciting young talents.
