San Francisco 49ers Acquire DE Bryce Huff from Philadelphia Eagles

The San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a trade to acquire defensive end Bryce Huff from the Philadelphia Eagles, aiming to bolster their pass rush for the upcoming season.

Trade Details

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers will send a mid-round draft pick to the Eagles in exchange for Huff. The trade is expected to be completed after June 1, allowing the Eagles to manage their salary cap more effectively. As part of the deal, Huff’s contract has been restructured: Philadelphia will pay $9.05 million of his $16.75 million guaranteed salary for 2025, while San Francisco will cover the remaining $7.95 million.

Huff’s Career Overview

Huff, 27, joined the Eagles in 2024 on a three-year, $51.1 million contract after a breakout season with the New York Jets, where he recorded 10 sacks. However, his tenure in Philadelphia was underwhelming; he managed only 2.5 sacks in 12 games and was inactive during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory.

Reunion with Robert Saleh

This move reunites Huff with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who previously coached him during his time with the Jets. Under Saleh’s guidance in 2023, Huff achieved career highs, including a 22.9% pass rush win rate, ranking third among edge rushers.

Impact on 49ers’ Defense

The 49ers aim to utilize Huff as a situational pass rusher, complementing star defensive end Nick Bosa and first-round draft pick Mykel Williams. Huff’s addition is part of a broader effort to revamp the defensive line after the departures of key players like Javon Hargrave and Leonard Floyd.

Looking Ahead

While Huff’s performance in Philadelphia fell short of expectations, the 49ers are optimistic that a return to a familiar system under Saleh will help him regain his previous form. If successful, this acquisition could significantly enhance San Francisco’s pass-rushing capabilities in the 2025 season.
